Asian ITS Market worth US$9B by 2015
A new study by Phil Sayeg and Professor Phil Charles forecasts that the overall intelligent transport systems (ITS) infrastructure market within China and the key ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) countries will be worth US$9B (2003 prices) in the period to 2015.

The two part study entitled “ITS in Asia – market trends and prospects to 2015” has found that the five main application areas in order of importance are expected to be:
- Expressway and toll road applications – ETC equipment and congestion management systems
- Traffic signals and related ITS technologies
- Commercial vehicle tracking, management and security systems
- Electronic ticketing/ smart cards
- Advanced traveller information.

Traffic signals and expressway applications such as electronic tolling and traffic control and surveillance systems are expected to continue to dominate the market.

However, in China particularly, fleet management applications, and advanced traveller information, using real time information on traffic conditions are expected to grow rapidly as market segments.

The main reasons for this are expected to be:
- supportive government policy and enabling infrastructure, such as the development of digital, navigable maps of highways and cities
- the rapid growth in mobile telecommunications and impact of 3G communications on the region after 2005
- the associated development of location-based services by private sector service providers.

While China is the major market, there are substantial opportunities in the five key ASEAN economies of Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia.
